The
seventh child of Mary Benjamin was
Emerson also known as Likkle
man or Benji. Born May 4, 1918 in
Garden Castle, St. Thomas, Emerson was
the fifth child from the marriage of
Mary and Jeremiah Benjamin.
Emerson
was a jack-of-all-trades kind of man.
While living in Llandewey, he was a
shoemaker and politician. He also was a
farmer and businessman – owned and
operated a grocery shop in Kingston. He
traveled to America several times on
farm work. His wits made him known as
the “valley lawyer” in Llandewey and the
“lawyer of the family.”
Emerson
had four children with Kathleen (Puncie)
: Glasentine, Carrenden, Duleta,
and Hillary. He later married Ena
and had six children together: Basil, Caroll, Harvey, Cohen, Gary, and Lenley.
He is
described as a very generous man who
provided for his family. Like his
brothers, he enjoyed playing cricket as
the ricket keeper. He was known to have
an easy-going personality.
Emerson passed away February 20, 1992.
His body was buried in his yard in
Llandewey.
